Okeanus Delivers Magnetometer Winch Systems to the Colombian Navy

Okeanus Refurbishes Benthic Disturber to Support NIWA Benthic Impact Experiment

The unique tool was brought back to life after a 20-year hiatus to support the program’s Benthic Disturber’s fifth deep ocean mining benthic impact experiment.

REDMOND, Wash. JULY 24, 2018 – Okeanus Science & Technology (Okeanus), an established marine equipment and engineering services provider, today announced their role in the success of a deep ocean mining benthic impact experiment (BIE) off the coast of New Zealand. Conducted by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), Okeanus supported the BIE by refurbishing and providing the Okeanus Benthic Disturber, a unique in situ tool designed to help assess potential impact associated with mining for manganese nodules. During the 28-day cruise, the Okeanus Benthic Disturber was towed on the seafloor in an effort to re-suspend bottom sediment that could be subsequently studied for its potential environmental impact.

Originally built by Sound Ocean Systems Inc. (acquired by Okeanus in 2017), the Okeanus Benthic Disturber was designed for NOAA as an in situ tool for assisting with the study of potential impact associated with mining for manganese nodules.
